Liber AL vel Legis, also known as The Book of the Law, is a communication received by the Magus Aleister Crowley from a praetor-human intelligence calling himself Aiwaz, on the 8th, 9th and I0th of April 1904. Crowley’s wife Rose began telling him, ‘They’re waiting for you‘, and falling in and out of trances. Used to conducting his experiments under strictly willed and regulated conditions, he began questioning his wife in order to validate her claims about the Egyptian God Horus whom Rose had no prior knowledge of. The Magus calculated the odds of Rose guessing right all of the questions he tested at 1 in 21 680,000. Crowley began to pay attention to the extraordinary circumstances and the result of the experiments conducted from I2 noon till 1 o’clock on 3 consecutive days is The Book of the Law. The names of the first 3 canvases were obtained from the following passage in Liber AL; Chap I. V.40. Who calls us Thelemites will do no wrong, if he look but close into the word. For there are therein Three Grades, the Hermit, and the Lover, and the man of Earth. Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law. There was no prior intention to give the images these titles; the first in the series was originally called ‘The Search'. Once I realised that verse 74, from chapter III, was a fitting description of The Lover canvas, There is a splendour in my name hidden and glorious, as the sun of midnight is ever the son. And that the specific ordering of the sheets is referred to in the previous verse from chapter III; 73. Paste the sheets from right to left and from top to bottom: then behold! I read through Liber AL with this revelation in mind and found the names referring to the 3 Thelemic grades perfect for the canvases. The sublime accuracy with which the images fit these titles and the ingenious instructions ordering the L shaped formation, only to be comprehended upon working on the ‘cornerstone’ or third canvas in the set as well as the relevance of the last series of verses in Chapter III, leave me with no doubt as to the awe inspiring power and foreknowledge of Aiwaz and the book itself. It is also worth noting that Liber AL vel Legis was originally entitled Liber L, the same shape that the 3 canvases form when placed in the order instructed. Significantly line-work for the initial piece in the series, The Hermit, was conceived sometime in 1998, years before I was familiar with Aleister Crowley’s work or Magick spelt with a k. In light of the information on this website this fact affirms Crowley’s convictions regarding independent and objective forms of intelligence; 'My observation of the Universe convinces me that there are beings of intelligence and power of a far higher quality than anything we can conceive of as human; that they are not necessarily based on the cerebral and nervous structures that we know, and that the one and only chance for mankind to advance as a whole is for individuals to make contact with such beings.' Parallel to this, two prominent aspects of The Hermit canvas, the hand and eye, are symbolical of the Zos Kia Cultus, which was initiated by the artist/Sorcerer Austin Osmond Spare and the author/Occultist Kenneth Grant in 1952. Zos equates with the hand, Kia with the eye, and the Cult’s method of Magick is the visual arts! Those who have read Kenneth Grant’s Typhonian Trilogies will notice many concurrent themes in the images on this website, the vast majority of which were pieced together prior to my reading the relevant parts of Grant’s work. The same can be said for The Man of Earth canvas, having affinities with Dion Fortune’s Cosmic Doctrine which I hadn’t yet read and the theories of Terrence McKenna whose concepts I was but vaguely familiar with. The synchronicities are far too acute to be explained away as subjective sub-consciousness or mere random coincidence, suggesting rather a common current or intelligence infusing these works. Yet another deeply significant link in regard to prophecy, Liber AL and these images is Verse 34, Chapter III; But your holy place shall be untouched throughout the centuries: though with fire and sword it be burnt down & shattered, yet an invisible house there standeth, and shall stand until the fall of the Great Equinox; when Hrumachis shall arise and the double-wanded one assume my throne and place. Another prophet shall arise, and bring fresh fever from the skies; another woman shall awake the lust & worship of the Snake; another soul of God and beast shall mingle in the globèd priest; another sacrifice shall stain the tomb; another king shall reign; and blessing no longer be poured To the Hawk-headed mystical Lord! A link far more than tenuous for at exactly the same time this website was being constructed the most intense hurricane season yet recorded began it’s devastation of the United States followed shortly after by a catastrophic season for Australia. In fact the 2005 American Hurricane Season and ’06 Australian Cyclone season are without precedent for both countries. (See Dreamtime Nus for an extensive recording of these events) Solidifying the interconnectedness of the prophetic verse “Another prophet shall arise, and bring fresh fever from the skies…” the 2005 Hurricane Season, and The Lover image itself, is the spiral force radiating horizontally from the hands of Horus while yet another spins vertically in the background with clouds gathering about it! Finally, in the Summer of 1918 Aleister Crowley spent his Magickal Retirement on Esopus Island, during which he recalled details of past lives as Eliphas Levi, Edward Kelly, Pope Alexander VI, a suicide, a polish scholar, a monk-Father Ivan, a deformed Hermaphrodite, Mohammed, Adam Weishaupt, Christian Rosencruetz, and Ko Hsuen disciple of Lao Tzu. Testimony to the validity of these claims is Crowley’s accurate knowledge of events in the future as well, which in light of the information on this website proves to be an accurate albeit tongue in cheek forecast. ‘My familiar spirit visited me during the night and commanded me to paint…I’ve been under the misapprehension that I was a great poet. I was clearly mistaken. Paint is my real medium and I am destined to become one of the outstanding Artists of my age…I am certain Aiwass has something important to express through paint , but he doesn’t know a thing about technique.’
